In 2023 The Singapore EDITION, commissioned Christian Furr to create an imposing painting for their newly desgined hotel restaurant. The painting entitled "Arrival", depicts what appears to be an ancient tapestry of the original settlers of modern day Singapore,  

 

Viewers are invited into a timeless scene of distinctive junks arriving and being wlecomed at Singapore Bay at magnificent scale in acrylic and oil paint. 
Christian Furr brings together elements of  the Western tapestry tradition and makes it Eastern in  nature.  Human activity that in fact spans the past, present and future, with numerous hidden elements to discover— a faded ghostly sail boat in the distance combined with the intricate detail of foliage and trees in soft greens amber and gold tones.

 

Personal thoughts

 

"This is the biggest painting I have ever done.
I wanted to do something great. Different, strange and daring even. It became the 4 x 3m depiction of a trompe l'oeil aged tapestry about the idea of 'arrival'. In this case an imagined story scene of the arrival, by sea of the first settlers and pioneers of Singapore in their distinctive junks to a country which is now one of the world's blue zones. 
Because of the immense size and tight deadline it was painted with immense deliberation. At the beginning I went to my art supplier to go through every colour and chose what I had never used before.  I also worked with a different methodology to create the painting.
Because I painted a distressed finish in the threads of the tapestry, there are areas of lost and found where your imagination can fill in the gaps."
